Nine out of ten Renton locals said they didn't feel secure walking around downtown after dark in a recent survey.

A smaller proportion of people in Renton think they are comfortable going about their daily activities in the city’s central business area, and an even smaller percentage of inhabitants say they feel safe going about their daily activities in their neighborhoods at night.

Randomly selecting 12,500 residences in the city of Renton, a postcard was sent to those homes with the invitation to participate in an online survey that was being conducted. Approximately 652 completed surveys were returned, which is approximately 5 percent of the amount that was sent back.

ComEngage has been awarded a contract with the city of Renton to conduct the city-wide community survey in 2023. The deal is worth $70,000. In the year 2023, the questionnaire will be given to respondents.

Nathan Wiggin, Vice President of Insights and Solutions for ComEngage, gave information on the survey’s confidence level, which was 95%, to the Renton Committee of the Whole on Monday. The confidence level was provided in the survey. This indicates that the results of the survey would be the same 95 times out of every 100 times if the poll were to be redone over the same time period with a fresh sample of respondents.

Following that, Wiggin said that the replies gathered from five percent of the participants were “pretty much average.”

According to the feedback that was collected, eighty percent of individuals believe that the quality of life in Renton either satisfies or exceeds their expectations for where they want to live. There were a total of 652 replies to this particular question. Despite this, the city is now dealing with considerable difficulties, including problems with violence and concerns about the safety of the general population.

Eighty percent of local residents who answered the poll said that they feel comfortable in their nearby neighborhood and when shopping throughout the day at The Landing retail mall complex. The conclusions of the poll are supported by these replies, which are congruent with those findings. A little more than sixty percent of residents of Renton have said that they need to get the impression that they are in danger while they are in the downtown area during the day.

The evening brought a decline in the residents’ perceptions of their own personal nighttime safety as well as the nighttime safety of The Landing, with just forty percent of residents stating that they felt comfortable in their area as well as at The Landing throughout the night. When asked, just 10% of people in Renton’s downtown area said they did not worry about their own personal safety while they were out late at night walking about the area.

Wiggin said that the data for violent crime in Renton had decreased from 2017 to the present day, and he urged that the city concentrate on disseminating this information to the general public. He stated that the statistics for violent crime in Renton had reduced between 2017 and the current day. Additionally, Wiggin noted that there has been a reduction in the general crime rate within the city since the year 2017.

In spite of this, The Center Square has previously reported on figures collected from the Washington Association of Sheriffs and Police Chiefs. These numbers revealed that the total level of criminal activity in Renton grew by 6.4% between the years 2021 and 2022. These statistics were obtained from the Washington Association of Sheriffs and Police Chiefs. In the year 2022, these numbers were presented in a piece of literature that was disseminated to various audiences. In the year 2021, there were 7,852 complaints of criminal activity, and in the year that followed, there were 8,353 incidents of criminal activity. The information provided by the group indicates that throughout the last few years, there has been a remarkable rise of 133% in the number of killings that have taken place inside the limits of the city of Renton. While there were a total of three homicides in the year 2021, there were a total of seven homicides in the next year, 2022. Since the beginning of the year, there have been four people killed in the city’s various incidents that have been classified as murders.

Wiggin pointed out that variables such as the city’s lack of sidewalks and inadequate street lighting may have a role in people’s impressions of the amount of crime that happens in the city.

These are the ideas that Wiggin presented at the meeting of the Renton Committee of the Whole. The next part of Wiggin’s statement was as follows: “We frequently observe that inadequate lighting is a significant contributor to the people feeling safe.” “People do not feel safe walking around if there are no sidewalks or street lights; if it’s dark, you’re afraid that you’re going to get mugged; if it’s bright [and] there are people around, you feel more safe.” [Citation needed] “People do not feel safe walking around if there are no sidewalks or street lights.” [Further Citation is required] While there are no sidewalks or street lights, people do not get the feeling that they are safe while they are strolling about. People need to get the impression that they are safe when they are roaming around since there are no sidewalks and no street lights.

When people in the city were polled on what they believed to be the most pressing issue confronting the municipality, the majority of respondents (70%) cited maintaining public order and safety as their number one concern. In answer to the inquiry, “What do you consider to be the most significant issue facing the city right now?” this was the response that was provided. This holds true in light of the conclusions of a follow-up poll question, in which respondents said that they believed that crime would be the most critical difficulty that Renton would confront over the course of the next five years. Eighty-two percent of those who participated in the survey said that they had this opinion.

Wiggin claims that the perspectives of city inhabitants on the most critical difficulties confronting the city are comparable to those expressed by persons living in other cities in which ComEngage has conducted surveys. These other cities have all been subjected to research by ComEngage. ComEngage’s surveying efforts have also been focused on the aforementioned additional cities.

According to the results of the research, Renton achieves a level of success that is higher than the national average in terms of the safety of daytime activities and the effectiveness of the police force. On the other hand, the city ranks below average when it comes to the safety of evening activities in the downtown region and at The Landing retail mall complex. Both of these locations are considered high-traffic areas.
